Learn About Vinyl Plank Flooring
For decades, hardwood flooring has been a top choice for homeowners who want to add natural style and luxury to their home settings. Hardwood, however, isn't suitable for every setting. How can you add a wood look to areas with moisture or foot traffic? You can choose vinyl plank flooring. Vinyl plank flooring, which is a type of luxury vinyl flooring, offers premium performance, so it can be installed in kitchens, bathrooms, and virtually anywhere else in the home.
Vinyl plank flooring features an ultra-durable layered construction. The top layer is called the wear layer, and it resists scratches and scuffs much better than traditional wood. Vinyl plank, even in active homes, therefore will not show everyday wear and tear. Underneath the wear layer is usually the designer layer, which includes a high-definition wood visual.
Vinyl planks are also supported by additional layers that are referred to as core and base layers. With these core and base layers, vinyl planks will not crack or collapse under heavy foot traffic, nor will they expand or contract when exposed to moisture.
Vinyl Plank Flooring vs Hardwood
As you can imagine, vinyl plank flooring is positioned primarily as a durable alternative to hardwood. How exactly does vinyl plank compare to hardwood?
Water resistance: All vinyl plank floors can handle moisture, but some options are actually considered waterproof. Hardwood cannot be installed in areas with moisture.
Wear resistance: With its wear layer, vinyl plank flooring can handle scratches and scuffs. Hardwood needs to be finished and consistently maintained, and even then it still can scratch.
Cost: Vinyl plank flooring is usually less expensive than hardwood.
Maintenance: Maintaining vinyl flooring is easier and less expensive than maintaining hardwood. Spills, for example, can simply be wiped from the surface.
