Hardwood Flooring Guide
With its enduring strength, beauty, and eclectic style, natural hardwood is considered the epitome of flooring by many. A traditional element of fine construction, hardwood floors are still highly sought after today.
Are you considering a hardwood floor for one of your favorite spaces? Hardwood truly has a lot to offer your business or residence, but it’s not a decision that should be made in haste. If incorrectly installed, your hardwood floors might not last as long as they should. Our experts can help you make the best selection for your unique space, while guiding you through the installation process – both vital steps to achieve a floor you and your family will adore for decades to come.
Solid Hardwood or Engineered Hardwood
Gone are the days when consumers were limited to solid planks of locally-sourced wood when shopping for new floors. These days, hardwood flooring choices are constantly evolving and currently there are two major families of hardwood flooring products to choose from: solid hardwood and engineered hardwood.
Solid hardwood, the more traditional of the two, is prized for its sheer longevity and its ability to transform. With each floor plank fashioned from a single piece of hardwood, the resulting floor can be refinished an infinite number of times. Solid hardwood floors have been known to last for decades and even centuries, commonly outliving their original owners. On the other hand, solid hardwood doesn’t work everywhere: it can’t be installed below grade. It can also be the pricier of the two options.
Engineered hardwood, a more recent innovation, looks and feels nearly identical to solid hardwood. The major difference is in the construction: while made entirely of wood, engineered flooring is built in layers. The end result is more inexpensive flooring that’s also denser. It can be installed below grade, making it a great candidate for your finished basement. However, future refinishing options are limited to one or two renovations over the course of its lifetime.
